About The Beaverdam Heritage Foundation
Beaverdam is a bit off the beaten path in Western Hanover County, Va.
Beaverdam is a bit off the beaten path in Western Hanover County, Va. This pastoral setting provides a beautiful and intriguing drive anytime of year. However, October brings tinges of color to the array of hardwood trees as you enter the Piedmont Plateau. The second Saturday of each October since 1997 is celebrated as Beaverdam Heritage Days where we focus on our rich history. Civil War encampments, craft demonstrations and tours of the Pop’s Country Store Museum and the Beaverdam's Nationally Historic Train Depot involve participants in a variety of experiences illustrating past events and a different way of life.
Even though education is a major theme that sustains Heritage Day, fun and enjoyment are also a priority. There will be a variety of musical events.
A variety of activities are designed for the young and the young at heart. A rich array of foods, from barbecue to ice cream, will be available to help provide the necessary energy to keep participants going throughout the day.
Many organizational booths, selling craft items and homemade products, will be available for those wishing to do some early holiday shopping. For shoppers, lots of parking space will be available (thanks to Beaverdam Quick Stop and the Gayle’s Auto Body Shop) and the parking situation is much less of a hassle than at the Mall. You will probably find items in Beaverdam that you cannot find at the mall.
It is most important to recognize the small group of Board members and committee chairs that meet monthly throughout the year to keep the flame of Beaverdam Heritage Days glowing. However, there are important sponsors that contribute and others who work behind the scene to provide many resources needed for this important event. The Gayle and the Trainham families provided field space for 14 years to make this event possible, and now we have the John Lewis Thompson Learning Center and Pop’s Country Store thanks to the Thompson and Smith families. All of these things are sincerely appreciated and attempts are made to recognize and thank these groups and individuals in various ways.
You can see that there are many reasons to visit Western Hanover County and the Beaverdam Heritage Days Foundation would like to extend each visitor a very warm welcome. We hope to see you at this year's Heritage Day.
